Japan: Days 1+2
Austin | September 2, 2008Why hello. We are in Japan, thank you for asking. Here’s what has happened so far:
- It is 4 A.M. because my sleep schedule is messed up, and I am waiting in my hotel for sunrise to take pictures. Sunrise happens here at like 5 A.M. which is a lot different than in the States. I went to bed at 10 P.M. since the sunset happens so soon too, and it felt like it was 4 hours later than it was.
- The reason I am in a hotel and not a dorm is because there was not enough room in the dorm, apparently, so I am kind of close and living it up in the Prince Hotel, which sounds fancier than it is. Here it is, in all its glory:
Everything is lower and smaller. Also, what worried me was the:

- I couldn’t really handle the reasons for this, so I opted for clogging the toilets.
- No one at this hotel, or anywhere in this city, knows English, so this is really just… pushing the limits of what I know (which is essentially nothing). I might be living with a family by the end of the week.
So, that is the boring stuff. On to the fun things!
Engrish!
The very first sign I see in the airport I had to quickly snap a picture of as to not get caught.
(What did the temperature measurement do that was so terrible?)
Signage
Japan has a lot of laws and things to say that we just cannot possibly know until we are here. Here is one such traffic example:
I thought at first this meant something about swerving, but the road is completely straight all around this sign, and there are no little arrows to be seen to avoid.
Drink of the Day
So I figured that I would try to drink as many different drinks as possible. I think I will include them in a Drink of the Day post. I hope that is okay.
Our first drink:
Boss Coffee. If you look closely, you’ll notice Rainbow Mountain is the specific blend. I decided to give it a shot.
It tastes like cream and sugar have been added already, and is pretty sweet. It truly brought out the Boss in me. I will have to award this drink
7/8 moustaches, if you like sweet coffee.
Well, I think that’s it for these few days. I will more pictures of the city itself, but I am more interested in the zany for now. The sunrise should happen in 15 minutes or so; see you guys later.
